Roth Sets Career-High in Sweep at Mercy

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - Led by a career-high 21 kills from senior Kiarra Roth, the volleyball team swept the Mavericks of Mercy College, 3-0, this evening from the Neil Judge Student-Athlete Center. Molloy improved to 9-12 on the season and 5-3 in East Coast Conference play while Mercy fell to 9-7 (4-5 ECC).

How it Happened
  • The home Mavericks took a 5-1 lead to start the first set.
  • Molloy responded by taking seven of the next nine points, leading 9-8, on a kill and ace from Roth and kills from juniors Rebecca Meier and Roberta Monticelli.
  • Mercy would tie the contest in the next point, but a string of four-straight points that featured a kill from Roth, a kill and a block from senior Chye Davis, and a block from Monticelli put the Lions in front, 13-9. The road team would maintain its lead through the end of the set.
  • The lead would change hands six times in the second set. Molloy would take a 16-14 lead following a kill from Roth and Mercy attacking error. The Mavericks would come within one, 17-16, but the rest of the set would belong to the Lions.
  • After starting the contest with a 5-2 lead on blocks from Davis, Roth, and Monticelli as well as another kill from Roth, Molloy led from open to close in the third and final set. 
Top Performances
  • Roth's 21 kills came on a .378 attacking percentage while adding eight digs, three aces, and three blocks.
  • Davis put up eight kills to go with a team-leading five blocks.
  • Meier had seven kills while Monticelli rounded out the top scorers with five.
  • Graduate student Mariana Donado Yepes tallied 37 assist sand eight digs while adding two blocks. 
  • Monticelli and sophomore Sara Hiebert also put up two blocks. 
  • Sophomore Aria Miller recorded six digs while adding three assists and an ace. 
  • Monticelli, junior Alex Brown, and sophomore Kerri Carlin each added three digs.

Up Next
The Lions return to Quealy Gymnasium for the final time in 2023 on Saturday (Oct. 28) as they take on Saint Thomas Aquinas College at 12:00 p.m. The program will celebrate seniors Colleen Moulder, Madison Wakely, Chye Davis, and Mariana Donado Yepes in a pre-game ceremony.
