Dobson Nets a Pair of Goals; Men's Soccer Defeats D'Youville, 3-0

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - Propelled by three first half goals and a season-high 25 shots, the Molloy men's soccer team defeated the Saints D'Youville University, 3-0, Wednesday afternoon at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions improve to 3-9-3 overall and 2-3-1 in East Coast Conference play, while the Saints move to 0-10 overall and 0-5 in league play.

How it Happened
  • The first chance of the afternoon happened 2:05 into the contest, as the Saints put its first shot just wide of the far post.
  • Molloy responded with three opportunities over the next 7:55, but all three shots taken were blocked by the D'Youville back line.
  • The cardinal and white cracked the scoreboard in the 11th minute, junior Diogo Ferreira put a perfect through ball from the right flank into the box and found senior Ryan Dobson who buried the goal to put Molloy ahead, 1-0.
  • Over the next 10 minutes of action, the Lions continued to pressure with four chances. Two shots were blocked and shots from Dobson and graduate student Jonas Jacobsen were saved by Saints goalkeeper Jake Marks.
  • In the 23rd minute following a deflection, Dobson struck a perfect shot off the inside of the crossbar and into the net to give Molloy a 2-0 advantage.
  • The Lions third goal would come 1:45 later, following a pass into the box that deflected into the net off the D'Youville defense for an own goal.
  • The Saints looked to answer the three-goal deficit with a goal of its own, but graduate student Dennis Mejia made a save in the 26th minute to keep the Saints off the scoreboard.
  • The road team would test Mejia twice more in the opening half in the 41st and 44th minutes, but Mejia made two additional saves to keep the zero on the scoreboard. The cardinal and white led, 3-0, heading into halftime.
  • The second half began with D'Youville generating chances in the 51st and 52nd minute, but both shots were wide of target.
  • In the 61st minute, Saints forward Finn Savage tried Mejia once more, but was to no avail as the graduate student would make another save.
  • The Lions would not allow another chance for the final 29 minutes of the contest and would go on to complete the shutout victory, 3-0.
Top Performances
  • Dobson netted two goals while firing four shots including three on target.
  • Ferreira dished out one assist.
  • Freshman Steph Maurice paced the squad with five shots.
  • In goal, Mejia made four saves to pick up his second shutout of the season.

Molloy will conclude its home portion of its schedule Saturday (Oct. 21) as they welcome Queens College to Rockville Centre on senior day. The contest is set to begin at John A. Darcy Field at 12:00 p.m.
