Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – The Molloy men's soccer team fell to the 24
th-ranked Mavericks of Mercy University, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field. The Lions move to 2-9-3 overall and 1-3-1 in East Coast Conference play, while the Mavericks improve to 7-2-4 overall and 4-0-2 in league play.
How it Happened
- The opening 22 minutes belonged to the Mavericks as they generated four shots including three on goal, but graduate student Dennis Mejia made three saves to keep the contest scoreless.
- Mercy continued its pressure in the 25th minute, when Phillimon Bedard-Khalid fired a shot that hit off the post.
- The first shot for the Lions came two minutes later when junior Connor Gervasi saw his opportunity go high of target.
- The Lions had a scoring chance in the 42nd minute as junior Diogo Ferreira fired a shot that was saved by Mercy goalkeeper Eirik Elvestad, sending the contest to halftime scoreless.
- Mercy looked to get on the scoreboard in the opening two minutes of the second stanza, but Mejia denied a shot on target to keep the contest without a score.
- Sophomore Matt Star generated a chance in the 49th minute, but his shot just went high.
- 12 minutes would go by without any chances until Mercy was able to crack the scoreboard, scoring in the 61st minute to go ahead, 1-0.
- Two minutes later junior Nick Leon looked for the equalizer, but his shot was saved to keep Molloy off the scoreboard.
- Graduate student Jonas Jacobsen found room to fire a scoring chance, but again in goal Elvestad denied the opportunity in the 72nd minute.
- The home team looked for an insurance goal in the 75th minute, but Mejia made a diving save to his right to keep Molloy within striking distance.
- In the 78th minute, Junior Matt Laya-Vetell created space and looked to score, but Elvestad would not allow the Lions to break through denying another chance.
- The Lions final chance came with 57 seconds remaining in the contest when freshman Steph Maurice was able to get a shot off, but Elvestad would make his fifth and final save to go on to secure the victory for the Mavericks, 1-0.

- Freshman Matthew Broadhead led the team with three shots.
- Jacobsen, Leon, Laya-Vetell, Ferreira, and Maurice totaled a shot on goal apiece.
- In goal, Mejia made six saves.
