Men's Basketball Kicks Off 2023 With Conference Win at Queens

Flushing, N.Y. - The men's basketball team begun the second half of the 2022-23 season with a 72-65 victory over Queens College from Fitzgerald Gymnasium. Molloy improved to 5-9 on the season and 4-1 in East Coast Conference play with the win while the Knights fell to 4-9 (1-3 ECC).

How it Happened
  • The Knights opened the contest on a 13-5 run with Molloy's points coming from a three-pointer from sophomore Kenny Lazo and a layup from sophomore Matt Lane. 
  • Molloy responded with a 10-2 run that included four points from both Lane and sophomore Darren Fergus to knot the score at 15 midway through the first half.
  • The teams exchanged baskets over the next three minutes with neither team taking a lead larger than three points. 
  • The Lions broke open the scoring on a 16-2 run that featured back-to-back three pointers from sophomore Billy Reyes and led 37-25 with just over two minutes to play in the half.
  • Molloy would take a 39-26 advantage into the break.
  • The Knights spent the first 10 minutes of the second half chipping away at the Lions' lead, coming within two, 51-49.
  • An 11-2 run on the back of scoring from both Lazo and Fergus resolidified Molloy's lead, 62-51, headed into the final five minutes of play.
  • The visitors would come within four in the final minute, 69-65, before Fergus went 3-of-4 from the charity stripe down the stretch to secure the victory.
Top Performances
  • Fergus led all scorers with 22 points, going 7-of-17 from the field, while leading the team with nine rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
  • Lazo added 12 points, five rebounds, two steals, and one assist.
  • Redshirt junior Kendell Ogilvie finished in double digits with 10 points and added six boards.
  • Senior William Muller dished out two assists to go with six points while Lane led with two blocks.

The Lions will welcome Bloomfield College to Quealy Gymnasium on Saturday (Jan. 7) at 12:00 p.m. The men's basketball team will be supporting Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer.
