Men's Basketball Falls at STAC, 84-76

Sparkill, N.Y. - The men's basketball team was defeated by Saint Thomas Aquinas College this afternoon from Aquinas Hall, 84-76. The Lions fell to 7-13 on the season and 6-3 in East Coast Conference play while the Spartans remain undefeated in league play (8-0) and improve to 17-3. 

How it Happened
  • The Molloy offense had a hot start, netting six of the contest's eight points with field goals from redshirt junior Kendell Ogilvie, senior William Muller, and sophomore Matt Lane
  • The Spartans responded with a 14-5 run to lead, 16-11, with 12 minutes remaining in the first half.
  • Muller, Ogilvie, and sophomore Darren Fergus scored the next six points for Molloy, giving the Lions a one-point lead entering the final 10 minutes of the half.
  • The visitors would remain within one with 8:21 on the clock before STAC jumped in front by as many as six, 34-28 with four minutes left.
  • Back-to-back three-pointers from sophomore Billy Reyes knotted the contest, but the home team ended the half on a 7-2 run to lead 41-36 at the break.
  • The Lions trailed most of the second half, including being down nine, 65-56, with nine minutes left in the contest.
  • A nine-point run on baskets from Ogilvie, Muller, and freshman Jake Lynch tied the contest, 65-65, but were unable to overtake the Spartans, who missed just three shots in the final six minutes of play for the victory.
Top Performances
  • Fergus led with 19 points and six assists while adding seven rebounds.
  • Muller had a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds while nabbing two steals and dishing out two assists.
  • Reyes also finished with 18 points on a career-high six three-pointers.
  • Ogilvie reached double digits with 12 points while chipping in six rebounds.

The Lions return home to Quealy Gymnasium on Wednesday (Jan. 25) for the final non-conference bout of the season, taking on Wilmington at 7:00 p.m.
