Volleyball Tops Mercy in Three Sets

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The volleyball team topped the Mavericks of Mercy College, 3-0, this evening from Quealy Gymnasium to improve to 8-7 on the season and 2-1 in East Coast Conference play. The loss dropped Mercy to 7-2 (1-1 ECC).

  • The teams had a back-and-forth first set that featured 11 tie scores, including as late as 22-22. 
  • The Mavericks took a one-point lead before the final three points of the set went in favor of the Lions, including a kill from freshman Lucy Vazquez to seal the set, 25-23.
  • Despite trailing 4-2 early, the second set belonged to Molloy who attacked at an impressive .600, committing no errors and allowed just four Maverick kills.
  • The Lions put together a 15-2 run that featured two kills from junior Kiarra Roth, two kills and two aces from junior Kathleen Doherty, a service ace from junior Brianna Medina, two kills and a block from junior Colleen Moulder, and a block and six assists from sophomore Julia Zalta and gave the home team a 17-6 lead.
  • Molloy would have another lengthy run of seven points to set the score at 24-9 before taking a two-set lead over the Mavericks.
  • The final set featured a Mercy lead for the majority of the set and the Lions found themselves playing from behind, tying the score on eight occasions.
  • With the score knotted at 21, back-to-back service aces from freshman Kaitlin Jordan paired with a Maverick error gave Molloy a 24-21 lead en route to the eventual set and match victory. 
Top Performances
  • Doherty and Jordan each tied a match-high eight kills, attacking at clips of .444 and .350, respectively. The pair also each recorded two aces.
  • Moulder added seven kills, two blocks and one dig.
  • Zalta tallied 30 assists and added six digs, three blocks, and one ace.
  • Freshman Aria Miller led the Lions with 11 digs.
Up Next
Molloy travels to Queens College on Tuesday (Oct. 4). The bout with the Knights is slated for 7:00 p.m.
