Volleyball Rallies for Five-Set Victory Over Adelphi

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The volleyball team returned to the court of Quealy Gymnasium for the first time in a month with a thrilling five-set victory over local rival Adelphi University. Molloy improved to 6-6 on the season with the victory while the Panthers fell to 6-7 with the loss. 

Prior to the start of the contest, the Department of Athletics recognized the 56 student-athletes who were added to the 4.0 GPA Club for their performance in the classroom in the Spring 2022 semester, including Kathleen Doherty, Madison Wakely, Julia Zalta, Alexa Rescigno, and Nicole Wagner of the volleyball program.

How it Happened
  • The teams exchanged points in the opening half of the first set before Molloy took a 16-12 lead after a 6-1 run that featured two kills from freshman Lucy Vazquez. The Lions would maintain the advantage through the end of the opening set.
  • Adelphi opened the second set with a 5-2 lead.
  • Molloy would string together five-straight points to lead, 19-17.
  • The teams would each have runs as the set drew near the end until the contest was tied, 24-24 after a kill from freshman Kaitlin Jordan. The Panthers would take the next two points to tie the game at one set apiece.
  • The score would be tied four times through the first half of the third set until the Lions took six of seven points to lead, 17-13, including two more kills from Vazquez. 
  • Adelphi would tie the contest, 24-24, but Molloy would take a one-set lead by taking the final two points of the third set. 
  • Despite the home team leading most of the fourth set, the Panthers were able to take the last four points of the set, winning it 25-23 and forcing a fifth and deciding set. 
  • The Lions opened the final set with a 7-1 lead, including blocks from Vazquez, Jordan, and sophomore Alex Brown.
  • Adelphi would come within three, 7-4, but the final eight-straight points of the contest went in favor of Molloy and featured two kills and a block from junior Colleen Moulder.
Top Performances
  • Three Lions reached double digit kills, led by 15 from Doherty, 12 from Vazquez, and 10 from Moulder, who attacked at a .474 clip. 
  • Jordan put up a game-high nine blocks while Moulder and Vazquez each added four. 
  • Zalta had a double-double with 47 assists and 10 digs to go with a game-high three aces and adding three kills and one block.
  • Doherty also notched a double-double with 18 digsg to go with her 15 kills as well as five assists and two blocks. 
  • Freshman Aria Miller tallied 21 digs while freshman Maya Akana also added 10.
