Three Reach Double Digits in Men's Basketball Win at D'Youville

Buffalo, N.Y. - The men's basketball team won its second-straight contest, beating D'Youville University, 84-78, this afternoon from College Center Gym. With the victory, Molloy improved to 2-0 in East Coast Conference play at 2-6 on the season while the Saints dropped to 2-6 (1-1 ECC). 

How it Happened
  • The contest was tied four times in the first 10 minutes before a 7-4 run that featured three-pointers from sophomore Darren Fergus and freshman Jake Lynch gave the Lions a 24-22 lead with six minutes left to play in the first half.
  • D'Youville responded with a 7-0 run to lead by five with four minutes on the clock.
  • At the end of the first half, the Saints were in front 34-28.
  • The home team's lead would increase to nine, 41-32, in the opening minutes of the second half before Molloy put together 10-straight points to lead, 42-41. 
  • The teams would exhange three-pointers until a triple from Fergus put Molloy in front, 48-44.
  • In the final eight minutes, D'Youville would tie the score on four occasions, including as late as 69-69 with 3:30 on the clock.
  • A layup from senior William Muller and fastbreak jump shot from Fergus gave the cardinal and white a four-point cushion headed into the final three minutes.
  • Molloy's lead would increase to as much as seven, 80-73, before sophomore Kenny Lazo clinched the victory with four-straight foul shots to end the contest with the score favoring the visitors, 84-78.
Top Performances
  • Fergus led all scorers with 24 points while topping the Lions with seven rebounds and adding two assists and one block.
  • Lazo netted 18 points while topping the squad with five assists and matched a career-high four steals. 
  • Muller rounded out Molloy's top scorers with 14 points while chipping in six rebounds, four assists, one block, and one steal.
  • Lynch set a career-high eight points, four assists, and four rebounds in the effort.
  • Sophomores Mick Browne and Billy Reyes combined for 13 of the team's 15 bench points with Reyes hitting three from long distance and Browne nabbing two steals to go with three helpers.

Molloy will step out of league play on Wednesday (Dec. 7) as they head to East Stroudsburg, Pa. to take on East Stroudsburg University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
