Volleyball Rallies for Five-Set Victory Over Queens

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The volleyball team concluded the home portion of its 2022 schedule with a thrilling five-set victory over Queens College this evening from Quealy Gymnasium. The victory sets Molloy at 14-10 on the season and 5-4 in East Coast Conference play while Queens falls to 11-12 (5-4 ECC) in the loss.

How it Happened
  • The Knights would score the first five points of the contest, a lead Molloy would be unable to overcome, recording just seven kills.
  • The score would be tied nine times through the first 22 points of the second set before the Lions put together a seven-point run to lead, 18-11. 
  • Queens would respond with a run of its own, knotting the score at 20.
  • The game would be tied four more times through the final points until three-straight errors from the visitors gave Molloy the 26-24 set victory.
  • Tied 13-13 in the third set, Queens would take 12 of the final 14 points to take a two-set lead.
  • Two kills from junior Chye Davis, two aces from sophomore Julia Zalta, and a block from Davis and freshman Maya Akana put the Lions in front, 13-7, in the fourth set.
  • Akana and Davis combined to add three more blocks in a five-point run to increase its lead to 18-9. 
  • Davis would record the final two points of the game to force a deciding set.
  • Junior Kiarra Roth had two kills while adding a block with Davis to start the fifth set, helping Molloy to a 6-2 lead.
  • Kills from Akana, Roth, and junior Kathleen Doherty as well as blocks from Davis and Doherty and an ace from graduate student Alexa Rescigno helped guide the Lions to the victory.
Top Performances
  • Roth led the offense with 15 kills while Doherty and Davis each added 10. 
  • Doherty tallied 16 digs for a double-double and added one ace.
  • Freshman Aria Miller led with 29 digs to go with three aces and one assist.
  • Sophomore Alex Brown recorded 14 digs while Zalta dished out 38 assists, two aces, three blocks, and five digs. 
  • Davis led the team with five blocks while freshman Kaitlin Jordan added three.
Up Next
Molloy will conclude the regular season on Saturday (Nov. 5) in Rochester, N.Y. against Roberts Wesleyan. The contest is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
