Late Free Throw Shooting Closes Out Men's Basketball Triumph Over Roberts Wesleyan

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The men's basketball team extended its winning streak to three, defeating Roberts Wesleyan, 86-80, Sunday afternoon. The Lions improve to 6-11 (5-3 ECC) with the win while the Redhawks fall to 6-6 (4-3 ECC).
 
How It Happened
  • The road team started the contest on a 9-2 scoring run, holding a seven-point lead over four minutes in.
  • Molloy answered quickly, compiling an 8-0 run highlighted by freshman Billy Reyes two three-point baskets. The Lions led 10-9 with 12:06 remaining in the opening stanza.
  • Back-to-back three's from senior Steven Torre opened up a five point lead, 23-18, for the home team with over six minutes left on the scoreboard.
  • With 3:51 to go, Torre sank two foul shots to push the Lions ahead, 33-24.
  • The teams traded baskets to conclude the first half, ending with the maroon and white ahead, 40-31, heading into the locker room.
  • Freshman Darren Fergus began the second half with consecutive layups, pushing the Molloy lead to 13, 44-31, with over 17 minutes to play.
  • The Redhawks cut the deficit to four, 48-44, following a layup from guard Amari Lee with 14:33 to go.
  • Reyes came back down the floor and drained two three-point shots in the next 1:20 of play, giving the Lions a 54-44 advantage with under 14 minutes remaining on the scoreboard.
  • A pair of free-throws from Roberts Wesleyan guard Abou Gbane shrunk the Molloy lead to four, 56-52, with 11:51 to play.
  • Junior Billy Muller hit a three to propel Molloy ahead by 11, 67-56, with over nine minutes remaining in the closing half.
  • A free-throw from the road team closed the deficit back down to four, 73-69, with six minutes left in the ball game.
  • Roberts Wesleyan closed the gap to one, 80-79, following a dunk from Gbane, with 25 seconds remaining on the scoreboard.
  • The Lions went to the free throw line three times in the final 25 seconds, sinking all six shots, four from junior Frankie Phelan and two from Fergus, to close out the, 86-80, victory.
 
Top Performances
  • Torre paced the way with a game-high 21 points and pulled down eight rebounds.
  • Fergus stuffed the stat sheet, netting 18 points while securing a game-high nine rebounds, dishing out a game-high eight assists, and swiping two steals.
  • Reyes tallied 14 points shooting 4-of-8 from three-point range.
  • Muller chipped in with 11 points shooting 71% from the field.
  • Phelan compiled a final line score of 10 points, eight rebounds and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line.
