Muller’s Career-High 31 Points Propels Men’s Basketball Past Bridgeport, 83-63

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The men's basketball team won its second straight conference contest, defeating the University of Bridgeport, 83-63, Wednesday evening inside Quealy Gymnasium. The Lions improved to 5-11 (4-3 ECC) with the win, while the Purple Knights fell to 7-10 (4-4 ECC).
 
How It Happened
  • The home team jumped out to a, 7-2 lead following baskets from freshman Darren Fergus, junior Frankie Phelan and junior William Muller with 16:23 remaining in the first half.
  • A three-point basket from Bridgeport forward Malcom Moye shortened the deficit to seven, 18-11, with 11:17 left on the scoreboard.
  • Over the next three minutes, the Lions put together a 10-0 scoring run, highlighted by Muller's six points, giving the home team a 28-11 advantage with under nine minutes to go.
  • The Purple Knights closed the first half on a 14-5 scoring run. Molloy led 33-25 heading into the locker room.
  • A jumper from freshman Billy Reyes and two field goals from Muller increased the home teams lead to 11, 40-29, with 17:10 to play.
  • With 12:51 on the clock, the road team closed the lead down to seven, 46-39.
  • Midway through the second half, the maroon and white compiled a 14-4 run, with contributions from freshmen Sey Dieng, Kenny Lazo, and Fergus. The Lions held a 60-43 advantage with 9:13 to go.
  • In the final seven minutes, the road team cut the lead down to 13, 64-51, but that was as close as Molloy would allow them to come, closing the game shooting 50 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the three-point line en route to the victory.
 
Top Performances
  • Muller collected his fifth double-double of the season, scoring a career-high 31 points and pulling down a career-high 13 rebounds.
  • Senior Steven Torre netted 12 points while securing nine rebounds.
  • Fergus netted nine points, hauled in a season-high 11 rebounds, while dishing out five assists.
  • Reyes compiled a final line score of eight points, four rebounds, and four assists.

The Lions return home on Sunday (Jan. 23) as they welcome Roberts Wesleyan to Rockville Centre. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
