Volleyball Tops SCSU, 3-1, in Sunday Split

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The volleyball team split its matches this afternoon with Daemen College and Southern Connecticut State University, topping the Owls of SCSU, 3-1. Molloy improved to 6-7 (1-1 ECC) in the effort.

How it Happened
  • The Lions opened up the contest to a 7-3 lead.
  • With the score later tied, 13-13, Daemen tallied back-to-back kills to take its first multi-point lead of the contest. The maroon and white would score next before the visitors rallied off a string of five to go in front, 20-14. 
  • Senior Graciela Cruz and graduate student Kassie Akouri Tejedor put down kills to help bring Molloy within three, 20-17, but the team was unable to overcome the deficit, dropping the first set.
  • The Wildcats put together another five-point run in the second set to take a 12-8 advantage. 
  • The closest Molloy would come would be six points, 21-15. 
  • The third set was a dog fight, with neither team scoring consecutive points until Molloy took a 7-5 advantage following an attack error and then a kill from sophomore Colleen Moulder.
  • The Lions then strung together four points, increasing its lead to 11-6.
  • Daemen chipped away at the lead, eventually overtaking Molloy, 24-23.
  • Junior Kathleen Doherty knotted the score at 24 to keep the maroon and white in the game. Doherty and freshman Rebecca Meier gave Molloy a two-point advantage, 26-25, but the final three points of the set went in favor of the visitors, giving them the match victory.
Top Performances
  • Doherty led the Lions with 12 kills while adding six digs. Cruz tallied 10 kills.
  • Akouri Tejedor put up 28 assists and 11 digs to go with five kills.
  • Sophomore Chye Davis added five blocks, three kills, and two digs. 
  • Senior Nicole Wagner tallied nine digs and four assists.

How it Happened
  • The score was tied four times in the opening eight points before Molloy pulled in front, 8-4, with a four point streak.
  • Trailing 17-14, the Owls put together five-straight points to lead for the first time, 19-17.
  • The visitors maintained its advantage through the end of the set, scoring the final four points consecutively.
  • Molloy led open to close in the second set, including dropping seven of eight consecutive points to lead, 15-8.
  • Molloy scored the set's final three points to win, 25-19.
  • The Owls opened the third set to a 4-0 run. The Lions worked the score until a seven-point rally, including three aces from Doherty, gave the home team a 21-19 lead.
  • Two kills from Cruz and two aces from freshman Alex Brown sealed the set, 25-21.
  • In the fourth set, it was Molloy's turn to start on a 4-0 run. 
  • The score would be tied three times before the Lions took seven of eight points, including four kills from Davis, to go in front, 19-11.
  • Kills down the stretch from freshman Madison Wakely, Doherty, and Cruz closed the contest in favor of the maroon and white, who attacked at a .333 clip in the final set.
Top Performances
  • Cruz matched a career-high 24 kills while adding two blocks.
  • Davis reached 16 kills, attacking at .609, while adding four blocks.
  • Akouri Tejedor had 40 assists, 16 digs, and seven kills.
  • Brown led the team with 21 digs while adding three aces and two assists.
  • Doherty also put up three aces while digging 16 balls. 
  • Wagner chipped in 14 digs and six assists.

The Lions will take on Mercy College on Wednesday (Sept. 29) at 7:00 p.m. from Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.
