Cruz, Doherty Reach Double Digits in Volleyball Sweep of Pace

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The volleyball team won its second match of the 2021 campaign with a 3-0 sweep of the Setters of Pace University this afternoon at Quealy Gymnasium. The Lions improved to 2-5 with the victory while Pace sits at 1-4 with the loss.

How it Happened
  • The maroon and white came out of the gate firing, taking a 5-1 lead featuring two service aces from graduate student Kassie Akouri Tejedor. 
  • Molloy would take nine of the next 10-straight points, including kills from sophomore Colleen Moulder, freshman Alex Brown, sophomore Chye Davis, and senior Graciela Cruz.
  • Aces from Akouri Tejedor, graduate student Emily Meyer, and sophomore Brianna Medina helped the home team slide to a 25-13 set victory.
  • Molloy's strong day at the service line continued into the second set, racking up three aces en route to a 9-1 lead.
  • The Setters would come within six, 22-16, but kills from Cruz and junior Kathleen Doherty sealed the final three points in favor of the Lions.
  • Pace led early in the third set, but a four-point run with kills from Davis and Doherty put Molloy in front, 11-6. 
  • The maroon and white would later go on a 10-1 run, including three-straight aces from Doherty, to lead 23-10. 
  • Brown ended the match with an ace of her own. 
Top Performances
  • Molloy's offense was led by 11 kills from Cruz and 10 from Doherty with Brown added six. 
  • The Lion's strong service was topped by six aces from Doherty, who also added six digs, as well as four aces each from Akouri Tejedor and Meyer.
  • Akouri Tejedor also recorded 34 assists, four digs, two kills, and two blocks while Meyer tallied 15 digs and five assists. 
  • Davis put up five blocks to go with four kills.

The maroon and white return to action on Saturday (Sept. 18) against both East Stroudsburg (1:00 p.m.) and Holy Family (3:00 p.m.) from Philadelphia, Pa.
