Volleyball Splits Dual with 3-0 Sweep of Nyack

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The volleyball team improved to 1-5 on the season, splitting a two-match day against Nyack College and the University of Tampa.

How it Happened
  • The first half of the first set saw the score knotted eight separate times before three kills from freshman Alex Brown and an ace from junior Kathleen Doherty helped the maroon and white score six-straight points to take an 18-13 lead.
  • The Warriors would string together a four-point run later to knot the score, 21-21, before Brown added two additional kills to lift Molloy in front, 24-21. 
  • The visiting team scored the next four points to earn a one-point advantage, 25-24, before three-straight attacking errors sealed the contest in favor of the Lions. 
  • Nyack came out of the second set strong, opening up with an 8-1 advantage.
  • Despite trailing, the maroon and white rattled off 13 of the next 14 points, including five kills from sophomore Chye Davis and two aces from graduate student Kassie Akouri Tejedor, to lead, 22-17. Akouri, Brown, and sophomore Colleen Moulder tallied the remaining three points for the Lions to take the second set, 25-23.
  • Molloy opened the final set on a 4-0 run with two more aces from the setter.
  • Eight-straight points from the home team featured two aces from Brown to give Molloy a 15-5 lead that the Warriors were unable to overcome.
Top Performances
  • Brown topped the squad with a career-high 10 kills while adding four aces, eight digs, and one block. 
  • Davis and senior Graciela Cruz each added eight kills with Cruz chipping in six digs and two blocks.
  • Akouri Tejedor led the team with five aces and 22 assists while adding seven digs. 
  • Doherty racked up 21 digs to go with four assists and two aces in the effort.

How it Happened
  • Tampa led the entirety of the first set, after taking five of the first seven points.
  • Kills from Cruz and Doherty paired with a service aces from senior Nicole Wagner gave Molloy a 9-6 lead in the second set. 
  • Eight of the next nine points belonged to the Spartans to give the visitors a 14-10 lead.  
  • The maroon and white kept the score close, coming within three after three-straight kills from Davis and freshman Rebecca Meier to set the score at 23-20 before UT took the second set. 
  • The maroon and white came out of the gate strong in the third set, scoring seven of the first nine points, including six in a row, to go in front, 7-2.
  • Tampa once again rallied to take an 11-9 lead. The Lions would knot the score five times, including as late as 20-20 before the Spartans took the set and the match.
Top Performances
  • Cruz topped the Lions with nine kills while Davis, Meier, and Brown each added six. 
  • Akouri Tejedor had a double-double 28 assists and 13 digs.
  • Wagner and graduate student Emily Meyer each added eight digs. 
  • Moulder recorded three blocks.
