Phelan's Buzzer-Beating Triple Lifts Men's Basketball to Overtime Win at Mercy 83-82

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - A three-pointer in the final second of overtime from junior Frankie Phelan gave the men's basketball team an 83-82 victory against Mercy College at Victory Hall Gym this afternoon. With the victory, the Lions improved to 2-1 on the season and in league play while the Mavericks fell to 0-3.


How it Happened
  • A 10-0 run, including consecutive three-pointers from freshman Mick Browne and junior Pierce Boczar gave the maroon and white a 21-10 lead midway through the first half.
  • The Mavericks played the final five minutes on a 12-5 run to come within six at the break, 36-30. 
  • Mercy worked the score to 40-40 with 15 minutes left in regulation. 
  • A 14-5 run put Molloy in front, 61-53, with just over five minutes left on the clock. 
  • Seven points from James Taylor, Jr. helped put Mercy in front, 66-65, headed into the final two minutes. The Mavericks maintained their lead until a fastbreak layup from freshman Darren Fergus knotted the score, 72-72, with six ticks left, forcing overtime. 
  • A three-pointer from senior Steven Torre set the score at 79 all with 1:21 left in the extra frame. The Mavericks led, 82-80, in the final seconds, but a last-second three-pointer from Phelan put the visitors in front as the horn buzzed.
Top Performances
  • Phelan led the Lions with 19 points while adding four rebounds, three assists, and one block. 
  • Sophomore James Montgomery notched his third-straight double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds to go with three steals, two blocks, and two assists. 
  • Four other members of the maroon and white also reached double digits in Fergus (12), Torre (12), junior Pano Pavlidis (10), and freshman Kenny Lazo (10).

The Lions return to action tomorrow in a back-to-back at Mercy. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
