Volleyball Stumbles at Southern Connecticut

New Haven, Conn. - The volleyball team was downed by the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University this evening from Pelz Gym, 3-0, in the team's final non-conference game of the regular season. Molloy sits at 9-10 with the loss while SCSU improved to 17-6.

How it Happened
  • After opening the contest down 3-0, the maroon and white took the next six points, including back-to-back aces from sophomore Kathleen Doherty, to lead 6-3.
  • A kill and a block from senior Graciela Cruz and a kill from sophomore Chye Davis helped Molloy to a 11-6 lead.
  • SCSU responded with a six-point run of its own later in the set to lead 16-13, before a seven-point stretch increased the lead to 23-14 before eventually taking the set.
  • The Lions maintained a three-point lead early in the second set. The home team would respond by going in front, 12-11, including three-straight kills, and would remain in front through the end of the set.
  • An evenly matched third set came down to the wire, with Molloy leading as late as 20-19 before SCSU closed out the contest with six unanswered points to secure the victory.
Top Performances
  • Cruz topped the squad with seven kills and three blocks. Sophomore Colleen Moulder also recorded three blocks. 
  • Doherty and Davis each tallied five kills to go with 15 digs and two aces from Doherty.
  • Graduate student Kassie Akouri Tejedor had a double-double with 21 assists and 16 digs.
