Volleyball Wins Third-Straight League Game, 3-1, at Queens

Flushing, N.Y. - The women's volleyball team returned to action this evening at Fitzgerald Gymnasium, topping the Knights of Queens College, 3-1. The victory is Molloy's third-straight East Coast conference win, setting the Lions at 9-9 overall and 4-2 in league play. Queens fell to 3-12 (2-4 ECC) with the loss.

How it Happened
  • The teams exchanged points in the opening moments of the contest before the maroon and white went in front, 9-7, after a four-point run.
  • The home team would come within one, 16-15, before Molloy closed out the set by taking nine of the final 10 points, including two aces from sophomore Brianna Medina
  • The Lions came out firing in the second set, scoring the first five points including two kills from freshman Alex Brown and two aces from graduate student Kassie Akouri-Tejedor. 
  • Another string of four points put Molloy in front, 12-3, before cruising to the second set victory.
  • The maroon and white put up a 0.00 hitting percentage in the third set. That fact, paired with a seven-point run from the Knights, gave Queens the set victory to put the contest at a score of 2-1.
  • Molloy had just two errors in the final set, hitting at a .440 clip, to earn the victory. 
Top Performances
  • The Lions' offense was led by eight kills from both Akouri Tejedor and Cruz. The graduate student setter also added 24 assists, six digs, and three aces.
  • Juniors Nicole Wagner (17) and Kathleen Doherty (14) each reached double digit digs and added an assist.
  • Sophomore Colleen Moulder put up a team-leading four blocks.

Molloy steps out of league play for a re-match against the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday (Oct. 19). The contest is slated for 7:00 p.m. from New Haven, Conn.
