Montgomery Posts Career-High Double-Double in Loss to STAC

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The men's basketball team fell to the Spartans of Saint Thomas Aquinas, 73-68, this evening from Quealy Gymnasium. Molloy sits at 5-5 in East Coast Conference play and 8-12 on the season in the loss while STAC improved to 19-3 (9-1 ECC).

Before the contest, Molloy recognized both the officials as part of the ECC's Officials Recognition Week as well as Molloy's president Dr. Drew Bogner, who will be retiring as the president after 20 years at the end of the academic year.

How it Happened
  • The opening minutes of the contest saw neither team able to take a lead larger than a field goal. A 9-0 run from the maroon and white put the home team in front, 14-6. 
  • The Lions would lead by as many as seven points, 22-15, with just under 10 minutes to play in the half.
  • The Spartans netted the next 11 points to take a 25-22 lead with seven minutes on the clock.
  • The home team went into the break down three, 39-36.
  • Midway through the second frame, STAC increased its lead to 13 points, 59-46. 
  • Molloy was able to work the deficit to four, 72-68, in the final minute of play but were unable to take a lead. 

Top Performances
  • Freshman James Montgomery pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds to go with 14 points in the effort.
  • Senior Nick Corbett led all scorers with 23 points and added seven assists.
  • Senior Josh Dennis added 12 points off the bench.
  • Junior Steven Torre led with four steals while redshirt junior Justin Caldwell recorded two blocks.

Molloy will face the University of the District of Columbia on Saturday (Feb. 8) at 2:00 p.m. in Quealy Gymnasium.
