Rockville Centre, N.Y. - Strong shooting, especially from long distance, led the men's basketball team to upset #9 University of Bridgeport, 95-88. The Purple Knights had not lost a contest since Dec. 7 and is the first loss in East Coast Conference play since losing to Molloy in the Championship Game last season. The maroon and white improved to 10-14 on the season and 7-7 in ECC play headed into the final weekend of the regular season.
How it Happened
- In the opening minutes of the contest, the Lions led, 7-2. UB would tie the contest, 14-14, after five minutes of play.
- Through the next eight minutes, neither team would lead by more than a field goal with the score being knotted on four occasions.Â
- The maroon and white fired off a 14-2 run to take a 50-36 lead with 3:28 left in the half.
- Molloy would carry its 14-point lead, 56-42, into the locker room.
- The Purple Knights would cut the deficit in half, 66-59, in the first five minutes of the second frame.
- An 8-2 run put the Lions in front, 78-64, with 7:31 left on the clock.
- Bridgeport erased Molloy's lead in the final two minutes of play, coming within two, 89-87, with 49 seconds to play.
- The home team ended the contest on a 6-1 run, claiming its first victory over a top-10 opponent.
Top Performances
- Senior Josh Dennis scored a career-high 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting to go with six rebounds, two assists, and one block.
- Senior Nick Corbett added 21 points (5-of-9 three-point field goals), five rebounds, four assists, one steal, and one block.Â
- Sophomore Frank Phelan set a career-high 12 points and six assists.Â
- Junior Steven Torre and redshirt junior Justin Caldwell each reached double digits, putting up 11 and 10 points, respectively. Torre added five assists while Caldwell topped the team with eight boards.Â
