Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The men's basketball team picked up its first victory of the 2020 calendar year, beating the Mavericks of Mercy College, 85-61, this afternoon in Quealy Gymnasium. Molloy improved to 7-9 on the season and 4-2 in East Coast Conference play with the victory.
How it Happened
- After taking a 7-0 lead to start the contest, the Lions' lead was erased on an 11-4 run.
- Molloy would score seven straight points to take a 21-14 lead.
- The home team remained in front much of the half, but the Mavericks knotted the score, 40-40, with 90 seconds left on the clock.
- A jumper from sophomore Colin Brady put Molloy back in front at the break, 42-41.
- The Lions had an explosive second half, holding Mercy to just eight field goals.
- Molloy's offense took advantage of a 24-2 run through the final 10 minutes of play, featuring 13 points from senior Nick Corbett, to earn the 85-61 victory.
Top Performances
- Corbett tallied a game-leading 36 points on 14-of-27 shooting. The guard added 11 rebounds for a double-double as well as four assists.
- Senior Josh Dennis added 16 points (8-of-13), seven rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and one steal.
- Junior Steven Torre netted 11 points, adding six boards, two steals, and two assists.
- Sophomore Frankie Phelan led the squad with three steals while sophomore Pano Pavlidis also recorded three blocks.
