Volleyball Adds Two Wins to Close Opening Weekend

​​​​​​Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The volleyball team ended the opening weekend of play with a 4-0 record, picking up three-set wins over both The College of Saint Rose and Wilmington University.

How it Happened
  • The Lions attacked at a game-best .265 in the first set, holding the Golden Knights to just nine points.
  • The second set saw closer competition, until a six-point run on the serving of senior Jessica Fischetti gave the home team a 19-10 advantage. 
  • Molloy took an early lead in the final set, leading 9-2 after a 7-0 run on the serving of sophomore Kathleen Doherty
  • Junior Kacey Affrunti topped the scoresheet with 12 kills, attacking at .409 on the afternoon while adding five blocks. 
  • Fischetti (13) and freshman Brynne Winkelman (10) each reached double-digit digs while junior Allie Lackner fired two service aces.

How it Happened
  • Molloy led by eight, 21-13, before the Wildcats responded with a five-point run to set the score at 21-18.
  • Affrunti and fifth year Carly Banks each posted back-to-back kills to secure the set in favor of the Lions.
  • Molloy attacked at a game-high .366 in the second set, starting the set with a 9-0 lead. 
  • Wilmington led for the first third of the final set before the maroon and white responded by scoring nine of the next 10 points to take a 15-10 lead.
  • The Wildcats played the Lions close in the final moments of the set, but the contest was ultimately sealed by a block from Affrunti and senior Sophia Smith.
  • Banks led the contest with 17 kills while Affrunti tallied 14 and added four aces. 
  • Doherty (16), Fischetti (14), and Smith (11) all reached double-digit digs, with Smith adding 36 assists for a double-double. 


Up Next
Molloy will head on the road to play in the Sandy Hoffman Memorial Tournament, hosted by Bentley University, next weekend (Sept. 13-14). The Lions open the tournament against Rollins College at 9:00 a.m. in Waltham, Mass.
