Volleyball Opens League Play with Sweep of Roberts Wesleyan

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The volleyball team opened East Coast Conference play with a 3-0 victory over Roberts Wesleyan College this afternoon from Quealy Gymnasium. Molloy improved to 9-3 on the season with the victory.

How it Happened
  • The maroon and white opened the contest on a 6-0 run.
  • The Redhawks would come within three, 8-5, before the Lions had another run of six points to take a 14-5 lead that included both kills and blocks from senior Hailey Wehr and Devon Hagerstrom. 
  • RWC was unable to overcome the deficit before a kill from redshirt senior Carly Banks sealed the first set, 25-12.
  • Leading by one in the second set, the home team put together 13 straight points on the serving of senior Jessica Fischetti to lead 19-5.
  • A six-point run would bring the Redhawks within eight, but the second set ended in favor of the Lions after a shared block from junior Graciela Cruz and freshman Chye Davis.
  • Molloy took nine of the first 12 points in the third set before the visitors came within three, 9-6.
  • Four-straight points gave the Lions a 13-6 lead featuring two kills from junior Maggie Lavelle and an ace from Fischetti.
  • The maroon and white took the set and the match on back-to-back kills from junior Alexa Morgan and senior Tara Carlin.
Top Performances
  • In a well-rounded attack, the Lions had 12 members of the team record a kill in the match, led by nine from Hagerstrom, five from Lavelle and four from both Banks and junior Kacey Affrunti. 
  • Senior Sophia Smith added 28 assists and eight digs in the effort while Morgan chipping in four assists.
  • Fischetti recorded 16 digs, two assists, and four aces. 
  • Hagerstrom led the team with four blocks followed by three from Davis. 

Up Next
The Lions return to the court tomorrow (Sept. 29) against reigining ECC Champion, Daemen College. The contest is slated for 12:00 p.m. from Quealy Gymnasium.
