Cestaro Tallies Game-Winner in Double Overtime Against Saint Rose

Albany, N.Y. – The Molloy men's soccer team topped the Saint Rose Golden Knights, 2-1, in double overtime Wednesday evening at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Lions improved to 3-1-1. The Golden Knights fell to 4-1.

How it Happened
  • The Lions struck first in the fifth minute. Senior Anthony Cestaro headed a corner kick from senior Carlos Bonilla into the net to make it 1-0.
  • Saint Rose, which outshot Molloy 8-5 in the first half, generated three shots on goal in the first half, but freshman Sergio Peralta was there to shut the door.
  • The maroon and white led 1-0 after the first stanza.
  • The Golden Knights evened the score, 1-1, in the 85th minute on a goal from Andrew Lule.
  • The home team created a pair of chances to take the lead in the final minute of play, but Peralta and Lions' defense kept the match tied after 90 minutes of play.
  • Bonilla and junior Kenneth Garcia had tries stopped in the first overtime session.
  • In the second extra session, Cestaro tallied the game-winning goal in the 109th minute.

  • Cestaro netted two goals. The senior leads the team with three goals and seven points.
  • Bonilla tallied his first assist of 2019.
  • Peralta made a career-high 13 saves to improve to 3-0 on the season.
  • Garcia led the team with four shots.
Coach's Comments
  • "All I told the boys  was I didn't want lose in overtime," head coach Danny Longo said. "The worst we could do was tie, but when we win let's celebrate like we've never done before. The team did exactly what I asked of them. That's why I coach college soccer."

  • The maroon and white hosts New York Tech in its ECC opener Saturday, September 28. The match with the Bears is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
