Men's Basketball Rallies For Overtime Win Over UDC in ECC-Opener, 102-101

Washington, D.C. – The Molloy men's basketball team defeated the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds, 102-101, in overtime Saturday afternoon in its ECC-opener at the UDC Gym. The Lions improved to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Firebirds fell to 4-6 overall and 0-1 in conference play. 

How it Happened
  • Molloy jumped out to a 10-2 lead, led by five points from senior Nick Corbett.
  • UDC answered with eight straight points to even the game at 10.
  • Sophomore Pano Pavlidis hit a jumper to put the Lions ahead 34-26 with 6:24 left in the half.
  • The Firebirds cut the lead to 36-35 with 4:04 remaining in the first stanza.
  • Ahead 47-43, junior Steven Torre made a triple to give the road team a 50-43 lead at the break.
  • Up 57-53, Molloy netted seven straight points, sparked by threes from Corbett and Torre, to extend its advantage to 64-53.
  • Corbett scored to make it a 76-64 with 7:52 left.
  • The maroon and white led 85-78 with 54 second remaining, but UDC closed the half on a 9-2 rally to even the score at 87.
  • The Firebirds opened the extra session on an 8-0 run to take a 95-87 lead.
  • With the home team ahead 100-94, Corbett hit a triple to make it 100-97 with 13 seconds left.
  • After a UDC free throw, Torre knocked down a three to cut the home team's advantage to 101-100 with five seconds remaining.
  • The home team missed a pair of free throws, and Corbett secured the rebound and was fouled.
  • Corbett hit a pair of foul shots with one second left to secure the 102-101 victory.
Top Performances
  • Corbett (28 points and 11 assists), Pavlidis (17 points and 13 rebounds), and redshirt junior Justin Caldwell (11 points and 11 rebounds) tallied double-doubles.
  • Torre, who shot 6-of-9 from three, netted 21 points.
  • Senior Josh Dennis tallied 13 points, and sophomore William Muller added nine points.
