Rockville Centre, N.Y. - In a contest that was tied on nine occasions, a last-second layup from senior
Josh Dennis gave the men's basketball team a 76-74 victory over New York Tech this afternoon from Quealy Gymnasium in the final game of the 2019 calendar year. The Lions improved to 6-6 on the season and 3-0 in East Coast Conference play.
How it Happened
- Through the first seven minutes of play, neither team was able to take more than a two-point lead. A nine-point run from the maroon and white put the home team up, 14-9, with 12:10 left to play in the opening half.
- A layup from junior Steven Torre gave the Lions its largest lead of the half, 20-12, with 10:13 on the clock.Â
- New York Tech would retake the lead with five and a half minutes to play following a three-pointer from Tim Dawson (27-26). Molloy, on the effort of three three-pointers from senior Nolan Kelly, went back in front, 39-32, before taking a 41-35 lead into the break.
- An eight-point run put the Bears in front, 49-48, in the first four minutes of the second frame.Â
- Tied 52-52, an 11-2 run from the Lions gave the home team a 63-54 lead with 11 minutes left to play.
- The score would be knotted three times in the final six minutes, including 74-74 with 1:30 on the clock after a layup from senior Nick Corbett.
- Corbett pulled down a rebound after a missed three-pointer from Laurynas Stonkus and fired a trey of his own, looking to win the contest. The shot didn't land, setting Dennis up for the offensive rebound and putting the ball through the net as time expired to seal the buzzer-beating victory for the Lions.Â

- Corbett led the maroon and white with 27 points and added three steals and two assists.Â
- Dennis netted 14 points to go with a game-high five steals as well as four rebounds and three assists.Â
- Kelly and Torre each netted nine points with Torre adding 10 rebounds in the effort.Â
