Men's Basketball Falls in Season Opener

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - The defending East Coast Conference Champion men's basketball team started off the 2019-20 campaign with a loss to Dominican College, 95-75, at Mercy College's tip-off tournament.

How it Happened
  • After trailing 5-0 to open the contest, six points from both senior Josh Dennis and junior Steven Torre gave the Lions its first lead of the afternoon, 14-13.
  • The teams exhanged one-point leads until a 9-2 run gave the Chargers a seven-point lead, 28-21.
  • Two layups from senior Nick Corbett and one from sophomore William Muller knotted the score at 28 with five minutes to play in the opening half.
  • Despite taking its largest lead of the contest, 34-32, Molloy trailed at the half, 41-38.
  • The Chargers, who joined the maroon and white in the NCAA East Regional Tournament, extended its lead to as much as 16 points in the first five minutes of the second half.
  • Despite 10 points in the half by both Dennis and Corbett, Molloy was unable to overcome the differential and dropped the contest, 95-75.

Top Performances
  • Molloy won the rebounding battle, 39-36, as well as scoring 15 second-chance points as opposed to Dominican's eight.
  • The difference came in points off turnovers (27-8) and points off the bench (36-13), with the Chargers earning the advantage in both categories.
  • The Lions' starters accounted for 62 of the team's 75 points, led by 19 from both Corbett and Dennis.
  • Corbett went 5-of-5 from the charity stripe and added two assist and two steals while Dennis topped the team with nine field goals, three assists, and three steals.
  • Muller tallied a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds while sophomore Pano Pavlidis paced the team with 11 boards.

Molloy returns to action in the second day of the Mercy College Tip-off against Southern New Hampshire University. The contest is slated for 12:00 p.m. from Victory Gymnasium.
