Men's Basketball Tops Concordia, 89-77, for First Win of the Season

Bronxville, N.Y. - The men's basketball team earned its first victory of the 2019-20 campaign, defeating the Clippers of Concordia College, 89-77. The Lions improved to 1-3 on the season with the victory.


How it Happened
  • After allowing the first basket of the game, a three-pointer to Dan Porcic, the maroon and white responded with a 10-0 run.
  • The visitors continued an offensive explosion, going in front by as much as 15 points, 21-6, in the first five minutes of play.
  • Concordia would work the score within four, 24-20, before the Lions eventually took a 19-point lead into the locker room, 44-25.
  • The Clippers spent the first half of the second frame cutting into the lead, comig within one, 61-60, with nine minutes left to play.
  • A layup from senior Nick Corbett put the maroon and white back in front by double digits, 77-67, with just under five minutes on the clock.
  • The home team would come within six down the stretch, 83-77, but the Lions ended the contest on a 6-0 run through the final minute of play to earn the 89-77 victory.

Top Performances
  • The Lions excelled offensively, shooting at 60-percent on the evening, including scoring 44 of its 89 points in the paint. 
  • Four of Molloy's five starters finished in double digits, led by 17 from Corbett with senior Josh Dennis adding 16, redshirt junior Justin Caldwell adding 13, and sophomore Pano Pavlidis tallying 10.
  • The maroon and white saw support from its bench, combining for a season-high 24 points.
  • Caldwell paced the team with nine rebounds and two blocks while Corbett and junior Steven Torre each dished out four assists.
  • Corbett and sophomore Frankie Phelan each added two steals. 

Up Next
Molloy will open the home portion of its schedule on Saturday (Nov. 23) against Bloomfield at 2:00 p.m. The team will be holding its second annual food drive to benefit the food pantry of St. Francis de Chantal Church in Wantagh.
