Volleyball Sweeps Queens, 3-0

Flushing, N.Y. - The volleyball team returned to East Coast Conference play with a 3-0 sweep of the Knights of Queens College to improve to 14-3 on the season and 4-0 in league play. This is the Lions' seventh-straight victory over the Knights dating back to the 2016 season.

How it Happened
  • Molloy opened the contest on a 5-1 run before the Knights would come within one, 10-9.
  • A string of five-straight points, including both a kill and a block from both junior Kacey Affrunti and sophomore Kathleen Doherty gave the Lions a 15-9 lead.
  • Queens would come within three, 20-17, but the visitors closed the opening set with five unanswered points for the 25-17 victory.
  • Queens led 12-7 in the second set, but the Lions responded to take a 18-16 lead, which they would not relinquish.
  • The third set saw a number of back-and-forth scoring until the maroon and white took a 16-12 advantage following consecutive errors by the Knights.
  • The home team would come within four, 18-14, but Molloy would hold on for a 25-18 set victory to seal the match.
Top Performances
  • Affrunti led the Lions with both 11 kills and four blocks.
  • Senior Sophia Smith tallied 24 assists, nine digs, four aces, and four kills.
  • Senior Jessica Fischetti recorded 12 digs and six assists to go with one ace.
  • Doherty, junior Graciela Cruz, and freshman Chye Davis each added three blocks.
