Volleyball Tops SCSU, 3-1

New Haven, Conn. - The volleyball team returned to action in a 3-1 victory over Southern Connecticut State University this evening. The win set the maroon and white at 17-4 on the season headed into the final six games of the season.

How it Happened
  • Molloy found itself in an early hole after the Owls took nine of 10 points to take a 14-6 lead. The Lions fell 25-12 to open the contest.
  • The maroon and white responded in the second set, going on a seven-point run to take a 13-4 lead. SCSU would come within eight, 22-14, but two kills from redshirt senior Carly Banks and an ace from reigning Rookie of the Week in sophomore Kathleen Doherty sealed the set in favor of the visitors.
  • After a back-and-forth opening to the third set, Molloy took a 14-7 lead on a six-point run featuring three kills from junior Kacey Affrunti.
  • The score was knotted, 20-20, before the Lions took a 2-0 advantage on the contest by taking five of the final six points.
  • The score would be tied 12 times throughout the fourth set, including as late as 19-19. Molloy sealed both the set and the match by taking the final three points on kills from Doherty, Affrunti, and freshman Chye Davis.
Top Performances
  • Affrunti (14), Banks (12), Davis (10), and senior Hailey Wehr (10) each reached double-digit kills for the Lions.
  • Senior Jessica Fischetti topped the scoresheet with 24 digs while adding three service aces. Freshman Brynne Winkelman set a career-high 17 digs while Doherty (14) and junior Allie Lackner (13) joined her in double-digits. 
  • Senior Sophia Smith tallied 46 assists in the effort.

Molloy returns to East Coast Conference play on Friday (Oct. 25) agaisnt Daemen College. The contest is slated for 6:00 p.m. in Amherst, N.Y.
