Banks' 22 Kills Leads Volleyball Over New Haven, 3-1

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The volleyball team defeated the University of New Haven, 3-1, at Quealy Gymnasium. The Lions improve to 5-3 on the season while the loss sets the Chargers at 7-3.

How it Happened
  • The Chargers hit at an impressive .326 in the first set.
  • Despite Molloy leading most of the way, including as late as 22-21, New Haven was able to take four of the final five points for the victory.
  • The Lions started the second set behind, 7-5, after a five-point run from New Haven. On the serving of freshman Nicole Wagner, Molloy was able to go on a five-point run of its own to go in front, 10-7.
  • The maroon and white maintained its advantage, jumping in front by as much as 20-11 on a .385 attacking percentage for the set, eventually winning, 25-14.
  • The Molloy attack came out even stronger in the third set, attacking at .395.
  • Two separate three-point runs gave the home team a 14-10 advantage, which the team maintained the remainder of the competition.
  • In the final set,  a six-point run on kills from senior Jeanne Reinis, sophomore Kacey Affrunti, and juniors Sophia Smith, and Hailey Wehr put Molloy ahead, 12-8.
  • The Lions maintained their lead, ending the contest on a six-point run, 25-16.
 
Key Performances
  • Redshirt junior Carly Banks led the contest with 22 kills, attacking a .404. Affrunti (12) and junior Devon Hagerstrom (11) also reached double-digits.
  • Smith tallied a season-high 55 assists, adding 13 digs for a double-double.
  • Defensively, junior libero Jessica Fischetti led with 21 digs. Reinis (16), Wagner (12), and senior Meaghan Carr (11) joined in double-digits.
  • Affrunti led the game with four blocks.
 
Looking Ahead
The Lions begin East Coast Conference play on Wednesday (Sept. 12) as they host Queens College at Quealy Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m.
