Washington, D.C. – The men's soccer team fell in heartbreaking fashion, 2-1 in double overtime, to the Firebirds of the University of the District of Columbia at UDC Field. With the loss, the Lions slip to 2-8 on the season and 0-4 in East Coast Conference play.
How it Happened
- The Firebirds were first on the board, scoring in the 20th minute off a cross into the box by Gabriel Torres. The ball found its way past goalkeeper Raul Bonilla off the foot of Raphael Pacano.
- The maroon and white countered 21 minutes later as senior Angelo Bordenca netted his second goal of the season to tie the contest, 1-1.
- Despite being out-shot 13-3 in the second half, the Molloy defense kept UDC off the board. A scoreless second frame sent the teams to overtime.
- After 10 minutes, neither team was able to get a shot off, forcing a second overtime period.
- The Firebirds took three straight shots, none of which reached the cage. The Lions' best chance came in the 109th minute in the form of a header by sophomore Nikola Aleksic, but the effort was stopped by the Firebirds' keeper.
- With just nine seconds remaining before earning a tie, UDC's Elvin Arbaiza took advantage of a deflection, scoring in the left side of the net, to seal the victory.
