Volleyball Splits Tri-Match

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The volleyball team split a tri-match against the College of Saint Rose and Post University to end the team's opening week, improving to 4-1 on the season.

Set-by-Set (Game 1)

  • Molloy 25, St. Rose 21
  • Molloy 15, St. Rose 25
  • Molloy 23, St. Rose 25
  • Molloy 12, St. Rose 25

How it Happened

  • After the score being tied 10 times, Molloy took advantage of errors from the Golden Knights and an ace from sophomore Sophia Smith to take a 22-19 lead. The Lions hit at .217 on the set. 
  • The offense struggled in the following three sets, attacking at only .048 the remainder of the match. 
  • The visitors took advantage of a nine-point run to take set two.
  • On the serving of junior Jessica Fischetti, Molloy rallied for five straight points in the third set, but were unable to capitalize.
  • St. Rose held the Lions to just 12 points in the final set to take the match.

Top Performances

  • Sophomore Kacey Affrunti led the team with 12 kills. 
  • Fischetti, who totaled 23 digs, also led the team with two aces.
  • Junior Devon Hagerstrom and redshirt junior Carly Banks each tallied three blocks.

How it Happened

  • Molloy returned to the court with renewed energy, pulling out to a 13-4 lead on the serving of senior Jeanne Reinis before taking the first set, 25-14.
  • Fischetti's serving led the maroon and white to a 12-6 lead following a four-point run. The Eagles came within 13, but another four-point run set the Lions ahead, 23-14 before an attack error and a kill from Banks sealed the set. 
  • The home team completed the sweep after taking a 13-7 lead to start the set. Post would come within one, 21-20, but were unable to overcome the early deficit. 

Top Performances

  • Banks (10) and Affrunti (14) led the Lions offensively, with the sophomore hitting at .483 for the match and adding two aces and three blocks. 
  • Smith dished out 30 helpers while Fischetti tallied 26 digs.

Molloy heads to local Adelphi University on Wednesday (Sept. 5). The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
