Five Reach Double Digits in Men's Basketball Victory Over NYIT, 82-71

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – Five members of the maroon and white reached double digits in an 82-71 victory over New York Institute of Technology this afternoon. With the victory, Molloy improved to 2-0 in East Coast Conference play and 5-3 on the season.
 
How it Happened
  • The Lions started the game on a 10-0 run, and maintained a lead whistle to whistle.
  • Five consecutive points from sophomore Steven Torre put Molloy in front by 15, 22-7, with just under nine minutes to play in the half.
  • A layup and tripe from Torre paired with a field goal from senior Chris O'Reilly gave the home team its largest lead of the contest, 40-20, with 2:21 left in the half.
  • NYIT would come within 14, 40-26, at the half.
  • Molloy regain its 20-point advantage early in the second half on a jumper from senior Mike Torre.
  • A 12-6 run from the maroon and white put the Lions in front by 26, 62-36, with 11 minutes to play.
  • The Bears' Kyonis Owens sunk a layup in the final seconds to cut Molloy's deficit to 11 and set the final score at 82-71.
 
Top Performances
  • Senior Curtis Jenkins led the Lions with a season-high 23 points. It it's the guard's fifth consecutive game in double digits. He added eight rebounds, three assists, three steals, and a block in the effort.
  • Junior Josh Dennis tallied 11 points while adding five boards, two blocks, and one helper.
  • Both Torres as well as junior Nick Corbett chipped in 10 points each. Mike Torre added eight rebounds and three steals while Corbett added three assists.
  • Freshman Billy Muller blocked a career-high three shots while pulling down seven boards to go with nine points and two steals.
  • As a team, the maroon and white totaled 21 points off of NYIT turnovers and scored 15 second chance points, pulling down 18 offensive rebounds.

Molloy continues conference play on Wednesday (Dec. 12) at the University of Bridgeport at 7:00 p.m.
