Men's Basketball Tops Bridgeport in Offensive Battle, 105-97

Bridgeport, Conn. – The men's basketball team won its fifth straight game, outlasting the University of Bridgeport, 105-97, in an offensive onslaught. The Lions improved to 3-0 in East Coast Conference play and 6-3 on the season.
 
How it Happened
  • Molloy took an early 7-0 lead on baskets from seniors Curtis Jenkins and Mike Torre and a triple from junior Nick Corbett.
  • The maroon and white maintained its advantage through most of the opening minutes until a a 7-0 run from the Purple Knights put the home team in front, 21-16, midway through the opening half.
  • UB increased its lead to as much as eight points with six minutes left in the half, but the Lions tied the contest, 37-37, before taking a lead off another trey from Corbett with 2:09 on the clock.
  • A layup from junior Nolan Kelly gave the visitors a two-point advantage, 42-40, headed into the break.
  • In a fury of scoring, the lead changed hands eight times in the opening seven minutes until the Purple Knights created some distance by hitting a shot beyond the arc to go in front, 61-56.
  • Baskets from Jenkins, senior Chris O'Reilly, and junior Josh Dennis put Molloy ahead, 70-66, with 10 minutes to play.
  • The score would become tied on eight occasions, including at 91-91 with just under two minutes remaining.
  • The maroon and white ended the contest with strong free throw shooting, going on a 14-6 run to eventually take the 105-97 victory.
 
Top Performances
  • The team topped 100 points for the first time since December 1, 2016, where the Lions played to a 109-102 overtime victory over Adelphi University.
  • Molloy shot 47.5 percent from the field on the evening, led by a perfect 9-for-9 from Jenkins.
  • The senior guard set a career-high 30 points in the effort while matching a career-high six steals and adding seven rebounds, five assists, and one block.
  • Torre scored 23 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
  • Corbett joined the pair in double digits with 18 points and a game-high eight helpers.
 
Coach's Comments
"Tonight was a great team win against a quality team in Bridgeport," explained head coach Charles Marquardt. "Strong defense down the stretch was pivotal in us coming away with the win."
 
Looking Ahead
Molloy returns to Rockville Centre on Saturday (Dec. 15) as they welcome Mercy College at 2:00 p.m.
