Men's Basketball Wins Sixth Straight in 96-76 Victory Over Mercy

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The men's basketball team won its sixth straight contest, improving to 4-0 in East Coast Conference play, in a 96-76 victory over Mercy College this afternoon from Quealy Gymnasium. It was the third time in four contests that the maroon and white topped 90 points, on the back of a 50-point second half.
 
How it Happened
  • The contest opened to an 11-4 lead in favor of the home team on baskets from seniors Curtis Jenkins and Mike Torre as well as juniors Nick Corbett and Josh Dennis.
  • The Mavericks tied the contest, 13-13, with 13 minutes to play in the half.
  • After trailing, 34-31 with six minutes on the clock, a 10-0 run on a layup, two triples, and two foul shots from Corbett put Molloy back in front, 41-34.
  • A three-pointer from junior Nolan Kelly put the Lions ahead by as much as eight, 44-46, before taking a 46-41 lead into the break.
  • Mercy would come within two, 54-52, early in the second half, but Molloy responded with a 9-0 run to take its largest lead of the contest, 63-52.
  • The maroon and white's advantage would remain in double digits throughout the second half, getting to as much as a 25-point lead, 94-69, on a three-pointer from sophomore Steven Torre.
  • The Lions shot 49.3 percent from the field, including 53.6 percent from long distance to power through to a 96-76 win.
 
Top Performances
  • Molloy was led by 27 points from Corbett, who shot 9-of-14 from the field and sunk five of his six three point attempts in the victory.
  • Mike Torre (18), Jenkins (16), and Kelly (14) also reached double digits in the effort, with Jenkins adding a team-leading seven rebounds and seven assists to go along with five steals.
  • Redshirt sophomore Justin Caldwell nabbed two steal while putting up three blocks to go with six rebounds.
 
Looking Ahead
The Lions step out of conference play on Wednesday (Dec. 19) as they face local Adelphi University at 7:00 p.m. in Rockville Centre in the penultimate contest of the 2018 calendar year.
