Worcester, Mass. – The men's basketball team fell to Saint Michael's College, 92-88, in the final game of the Assumption Tip-Off Classic this afternoon. The Lions sit at 0-2 after the opening weekend of play.
How it Happened
- The maroon and white found themselves down, 28-18 midway through the first half against the Purple Knights.
- With 6:28 remaining in the first half, the Lions cut the deficit in half, 33-28 on points from freshman Billy Muller and seniors Mike Torre and Curtis Jenkins.
- Seven unanswered points from Saint Michael's set the score at 40-28 with just over five minutes before the break.
- Saint Michael's ended the half on a 13-8 run to take a 53-36 lead into the locker room.
- After falling behind by as much as 21 points, a layup from junior Josh Dennis brought the maroon and white within 13, 81-68.
- The Lions made a late push, fueled by 22 second-half points from junior Nick Corbett, including back-to-back three-pointers in the final 12 seconds, but the early deficit was too great to overcome.
Top Performances
- Corbett led the maroon and white with 33 total points, going 10-of-20 from the field and 9-of-9 from the foul line.
- Torre and Jenkins each had double-doubles, scoring 16 points and pulling down 10 and 11 rebounds, respectively. The pair each added four assists.
- Senior Derrick Okunpolor led the Lions with two blocks while sophomore Steven Torre had a game-high four steals.
