Three Reach Double-Digits in 3-0 Sweep of NYIT

Old Westbury, N.Y. – Three members of the maroon and white reached double digit kills in volleyball's 3-0 victory over New York Institute of Technology. With the victory, the Lions improved to 9-5 on the season and 4-2 in East Coast Conference play while the Bears fell to 9-10 (1-5 ECC) on the campaign.

How it Happened
  • The Lions took advantage of a 6-1 lead to start the contest; tallying five straight points on kills from redshirt junior Carly Banks and juniors Hailey Wehr, Devon Hagerstrom, and Sophia Smith.
  • The Bears kept it close in the second set, pulling in front, 15-11, on a kill from Tiffany Verni.
  • A kill from sophomore Kacey Affrunti knotted the contest, 18-18. An attacking error by the Bears paired with a service ace from senior Meaghan Carr put Molloy in front, 21-18, which the Lions maintained through the end of the set.
  • The visiting team took advantage of a four-point run in the third set on kills from Banks and Hagerstrom to go in front, 13-7.
  • NYIT would come within two late in the set, 23-21, but Molloy closed out the victory to take the set and the match.
 
Top Performances
  • Banks topped the match with15 kills while Hagerstrom (11) and Wehr (10) each reached double-digits for Molloy.
  • Smith recorded a double-double, leading the game with 36 assists while adding 17 kills and one service ace.
  • Junior Jessica Fischetti topped the evening with 23 digs while freshman Nicole Wagner tallied 11.
  • Affrunti and Hagerstrom each tabbed two blocks.
 
Looking Ahead
The Lions return to action tomorrow (Oct. 6) as they face LIU Post at 1:00 p.m. in Rockville Centre.
