Volleyball Sweeps SCSU, 3-0

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The volleyball team defeated the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University, 3-0, this evening from Quealy Gymnasium. The Lions improved to 16-6 on the season while the loss set SCSU at 14-13.

How it Happened
  • Molloy pulled out to an 8-4 lead following five unanswered points on the serving of sophomore Maggie Lavelle. The Owls would come within two, 18-16, but Molloy held on to take the opening set.
  • The second set saw an early 6-1 lead for the maroon and white. SCSU battled back to once again come within two, 10-8.
  • Another four-point run from the Lions extended the lead to seven, 17-10. The Owls were able to rally back within two, 19-17, but the maroon and white were able to stay in front. SCSU threatened late, scoring three straight points to come within one, 24-23, but a kill from redshirt junior Carly Banks sealed the set in favor of the home team.
  • With the score knotted, 9-9, Molloy fired off six straight points on the serving of junior Jessica Fischetti to go in front, 15-9.
  • The Owls continued to battle, however, tying the contest, 23-23 and then again, 24-24. Back-to-back kills from Banks and sophomore Kacey Affrunti sealed the set and the match in favor of the Lions.
 
Top Performances
  • Banks led the team with 14 kills while Affrunti tallied 13.
  • Senior Meaghan Carr led with 19 digs while adding two service aces. Fischetti (14) and Lavelle (11) each reached double digit digs.
  • Junior Sophia Smith dished out 33 helpers.
 
Looking Ahead
The Lions step back into conference play this weekend as they head to upstate New York to take on Roberts Wesleyan (Oct. 26) and Daemen (Oct. 27). The match with the Redhawks is slated for 7:00 p.m. from Rochester, N.Y.
