Volleyball Downs Bridgeport, 3-1

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The volleyball team defeated the University of Bridgeport, 3-1, this afternoon in Quealy Gymnasium. With the victory, the Lions now sit at 15-6 on the season and 8-2 in East Coast Conference play. Molloy has split the season series with the Purple Knights and sit at second-place in the league headed into the final four conference games of the regular season.

How it Happened
  • The two teams battled back-and-forth without much separation until the Lions fired off three unanswered points, featuring kills from redshirt junior Carly Banks and junior Devon Hagerstrom, to go in front, 16-12.
  • The Purple Knights responded with a six-point run, taking advantage of Molloy misplays, to take a 20-19 lead.
  • The Lions ended the set by scoring the next six points for a 25-20 victory, featuring four kills from junior Hailey Wehr.
  • Two lengthy runs helped Bridgeport take an early 11-4 lead in the second set, which Molloy was unable to overcome.
  • The Lions opened the third set with a 4-1 lead before extending its lead to a 13-8. UB would come within two, 20-18, but Molloy hung on to take the third set.
  • The final set saw Molloy take a 12-6. UB tied the game, 17-17, before three-straight points gave the home team a 20-17 lead.
  • The Purple Knights bridged the gap to come within two, 21-19, before the Lions sealed the contest with four-straight points.
 
Top Performances
  • Sophomore Kacey Affrunti led the way with 13 kills, adding four assists and four blocks. Banks tallied 12 kils.
  • Senior Meaghan Carr (16), junior Jessica Fischetti (19), and junior Sophia Smith (11) each reached double digits in digs, with Smith adding 42 assists for a fifth-straight double-double.
 
Looking Ahead
The Lions will step out of league play for the final time in the regular season, taking on Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday (Oct. 23) at 7:00 p.m. from Quealy Gymnasium.
