Volleyball Defeats Mercy, 3-1

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The volleyball team defeated the Mavericks of Mercy College, 3-1, this evening in Quealy Gymnasium. The victory set the Lions at 14-6 on the season and 7-2 in East Coast Conference play.

How it Happened
  • The contest began with back-and-forth scoring until Molloy pulled in front, 10-5, on a four-point run. The Mavericks would come within four on the next point, but the Lions kept its foot on the gas pedal and never relinquished the lead.
  • Molloy's offense continued into the second set, opening to a 4-0 lead. Mercy tied the contest, 7-7, before the Lions scored three straight points to go in front, 10-7.
  • The Mavericks pulled within two, 17-15, but the maroon and white fired off six points on kills from junior Devon Hagerstrom, sophomore Maggie Lavelle, and redshirt junior Carly Banks to set the score at 23-15 before eventually taking the set.
  • The Lions attacked at a game-low .135 in the third set.
  • The contest was tied four times in the final half of the set before the Mavericks pulled away with a late four-point run, 24-18, before forcing a fourth set.
  • The final set saw back-and –forth action similar to the contest's start until junior Sophia Smith and sophomore Kacey Affrunti combined to help the Lions to a 13-7 lead on a five-point run.
  • The Lions maintained its lead to take the set and the contest.
 
Top Performances
  • Banks led the maroon and white with 15 kills while Affrunti talied 13 kills while adding three blocks.
  • Smith had a career-high six aces while adding 40 assists and 12 digs for her fourth-straight double-double.
  • Junior Jessica Fischetti added 24 digs.
 
Looking Ahead
Molloy returns to action tomorrow (Oct. 20) against the University of Bridgeport at 1:00 p.m. from Quealy Gymnasium.
