Rockville Centre, N.Y. (Jan. 3, 2018) – The men's basketball team opened the 2018 calendar on a sour note, falling to LIU Post, 71-65. The maroon and white now sit at 3-11 (2-2 ECC) with the loss.
Junior
Mike Torre led all scorers with 19 points while junior
Curtis Jenkins and sophomore
Nick Corbett each tallied double-doubles for the Lions with 14 and 12 points, respectively, paired with 10 rebounds each. The pair each also added three assists in the effort.
Molloy took its first lead of the game with just over nine minutes to play in the first half, as a three-pointer from Corbett sparked a 10-0 run for the home team to take a 26-19 lead. Torre tallied 11 points in the frame to help lead the Lions to a 44-41 lead at the break.
In the second half, however, the maroon and white struggled to score, shooting just 25.9 percent from the field. Sophomore
Nolan Kelly connected on a jump shot with 14 minutes left to put Molloy ahead, 51-46, but the combination of Jared Rivers (18 points) and Darien Jenkins (15 points) helped the Pioneers regain the lead, 59-58. Torre sunk a layup with 7:21 remaining on the clock to put Molloy up, 60-59, but that would be the Lions' last field goal of the contest. LIU Post closed the final minutes of play with a 10-5 run to improve to 5-9 (3-1 ECC).
