Nick Corbett, the Molloy men's basketball team snapped a nine-game losing streak, defeating the University of the District of Columbia, 76-57.
The guard shot 8-of-12 from the field, hitting six three-point shots, and led the game with six assists. Junior
Curtis Jenkins added 15 points (7-of-14), nine rebounds, three assists, and three steals while redshirt freshman
Justin Caldwell matched a career-high 12 points. Sophomore
Josh Dennis pulled down nine boards.
Molloy got on the board first as junior
Mike Torre hit a three-pointer to put the Lions up, 3-0. The lead extended to four points in the first five minutes following a triple from Jenkins. UDC battled back, taking their largest lead of the contest, 22-19, with 11 minutes remaining in the opening half. The maroon and white exploded back into action, tearing off to a 14-0 run to take an 11-point lead, 33-22. Corbett tallied the final five points of the half for the home team, helping the Lions to a 46-30 lead at the break.
Mid-way through the second frame, a dunk from Caldwell put Molloy in front, 66-38. A trey from Corbett gave the maroon and white its largest lead of the evening, 69-38, with just under nine minutes left to play. A 14-5 run from the Firebirds helped to bridge the gap, but the Lions walked away victorious, improving to 4-16 (3-7 East Coast Conference).
The Lions kick off a three-game road trip on Saturday (Jan. 27) as they face Saint Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, N.Y. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
