Nyack, N.Y. (Jan. 13, 2018) - Despite a career-high 29-point performance from junior Curtis Jenkins, the men's basketball team (3-14, 2-5 ECC) dropped its seventh straight contest, 67-65 to the Mavericks of Mercy College (8-8, 4-4 ECC).
The guard shot 8-of-20 from the field and 11-of-12 from the foul line, while also chipping in nine rebounds, four steals, three assists, and two blocks. Sophomore Nick Corbett tallied 12 points for the Lions; junior Derrick Okunpolor and freshman Steven Torre each added eight points.
The maroon and white started the contest on a 9-2 run in the first three minutes of action. The Mavericks battled back to come within two, but back-to-back three-pointers from Steven Torre helped keep the Lions in front. With 7:21 left to play in the first half, Corbett hit a triple, one of four on the afternoon, to give Molloy its largest lead of the half, 29-20. Molloy ultimately took a 38-33 advantage into the break.
A nine-point run in the second frame, featuring four points from sophomore Josh Dennis (7 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals) propelled the visitors to a 47-37 lead. The Mavericks responded with a 17-6 run of its own to take its first lead of the day, 54-53, with 6:35 remaining on the clock.
A number of scoreless Molloy possessions allowed Mercy to extend to its largest lead, 60-53, with just under four minutes to play. Jenkins scored nine of the Lions' final 12 points, including tying the contest, 65-65, with 63 seconds remaining. The Mavericks broke the knot 26 seconds later with a layup, winning the game 67-65.
Molloy will host Daemen College on Friday (Jan. 19) at 7:00 p.m. in Quealy Gymnasium.
