Rockville Centre, N.Y. (Sept. 30, 2017) – The Molloy men's soccer team fell to the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions move to 3-6 overall and 2-1 in ECC play with the loss. Sophomore
Anthony Cestaro (Massapequa, N.Y.) scored for the maroon and white.
In the opening stanza, UDC (8-2, 3-0 ECC) outshot the Lions 11-3. Molloy keeper
Raul Bonilla (Brentwood, N.Y.) made four of his five saves in the first to keep the score even at the break.
The Firebirds opened the scoring in the 51
st minute on a goal from Raphael Pacano. The Lions answered in the 66
th minute. Cestaro touched a free kick from sophomore
Paul Morales (Jackson Heights, N.Y.) into the net to knot the score, 1-1.
But UDC, which outshot the home team 17-10, went ahead, 2-1, on a goal from Salah Warid in the 80
th minute.
Down a goal, Molloy's offense, which was led by four shots from Cestaro and three shots from junior
Daniel Massey (Warrington, England), created chances but couldn't find a way to tie the match.
The Lions continue ECC play Monday, Oct. 2, when they head to LIU Post. Kickoff with the Pioneers is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
