Three-Set Victory Over Queens Leads Volleyball to Most Wins Since 1998

Flushing, N.Y. (Sept. 27, 2017) – In a three-set victory over Queens College, the Molloy volleyball team improved to 14-2 (3-0 East Coast Conference), the program's most wins in a season since 1998.

Redshirt sophomore Carly Banks (Camas, Wash.) lead all attackers, tallying 15 kills in the victory. Sophomore Hailey Wehr (Wading River, N.Y.) totaled nine while freshman Kacey Affrunti (Levittown, N.Y.) and sophomore Shannon Wren (Lynbrook, N.Y.) added eight and seven, respectively. In the back row, senior Dakota O'Neill (Long Beach, N.Y.) reached 13 digs while adding three assists; sophomore Sophia Smith (Georgetown, Texas) recorded 29 assist in the effort.

Despite Molloy jetting out to an 8-3 lead, the Knights of Queens College rallied late in the first set for a six-point run to come within one point, 21-20. The maroon and white took control back of the lead following a service error by Queens and a kill from Affrunti. Ultimately, Banks closed the set with back-to-back kills.

A six-point run for the maroon and white jump started the second set. The Knights came as close as two points, 6-4, but the Lions continued tallying points to roll to a 25-17 victory. While neither team established a run greater of three points in the third set, Molloy took recorded 15 kills in the third set to help them to the sweeping victory.

On the match, strong service led the Lions, as the team recorded five aces, featuring two from Smith and O'Neill, and six blocks, with Wehr and Affrunti each recording two.

After a series of five games in nine days, the team will take a five day break before facing the University of Bridgeport at Hubbell Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m.
