Bridgeport, Conn. (Oct. 3, 2017) – Following four sets of back-and-forth action, the Molloy volleyball team dropped a 15-4 deciding set to fall to the University of Bridgeport, 3-2, at Hubbell Gymnasium. The loss,the maroon and white's first in conference play, sets them at 14-3 on the season (3-1 ECC) while Bridgeport improves to 7-8 (3-1 ECC) with the victory.
For the second time this season, redshirt sophomore
Carly Banks (Camas, Wash.) matched a single-game program record 28 kills, attacking at .426 on the evening while sophomore
Sophia Smith (Georgetown, Texas) matched a career-high 57 assists while adding three kills, two service aces, two blocks, and six digs.

The first three sets saw incredibly close matches, with the score being tied 25 different times and the second set going to 26 points.
Needing to take the fourth set to continue the contest, the maroon and white exploded to an 11-2 lead, including a seven-point run on the serving of Smith. The Purple Knights rallied late in the set to tie the score, 21-21. Molloy, however, regained the serve following a block from Smith and freshman
Kacey Affrunti (Levittown, N.Y.) before Banks and Affrunti combined for three kills to take the 25-21 set victory and force a fifth and deciding set.
Aided by five errors from the Lions, Bridgeport took an early 7-0 lead in the quest to 15 points. The deficit would be too much for the maroon and white to overcome, falling 15-4.
Affrunti joined Banks in double-digit kills with 13, adding five blocks while sophomore
Hailey Wehr (Wading River, N.Y.) chipped in with nine kills. Senior
Dakota O'Neill (Long Beach, N.Y.) led the contest with 25 digs, adding three assists and a service ace while junior
Meaghan Carr (Mineola, N.Y.) tallied 13 digs, one assist, and two aces. Freshman
Emily Meyer (Seaford, N.Y.) and sophomore
Jessica Fischetti (Seaford, N.Y.) each dug eight balls.
