Daniel Massey (Warrington, England) netted two goals to lead Molloy's men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over the Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks Saturday afternoon. The Lions improve to 3-5 overall and 2-0 in the East Coast Conference.
The teams each fired four shots in the first half, but the match entered the break scoreless.
The Lions' offense, which outshot the Redhawks 14-4 in the second half, was led by Massey, who took nine shots, as well as freshman
Jason Alvarez (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and sophomore
Anthony Cestaro (Massapequa, N.Y.), who logged three shots each.
Molloy broke the scoreless tie in the 79
th minute after Alvarez led Massey with a pass for a goal. The maroon and white increased the lead, 2-0, in the 88
th minute. Massey touched a pass from freshman
Oscar Magnusson (Halmstad, Sweden) into the net.
Redshirt junior
Stephen Tappeto (Merrick, N.Y.) made three saves in the first half, and junior
Raul Bonilla (Brentwood, N.Y.) made a save in the shutout.
The Lions return to action Saturday, Sept. 30 when they host the University of the District of Columbia. Kick-off with the Firebirds is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
