Massey's Penalty Kick Leads Men's Soccer to Opening Night Victory

NORTH ANDOVER, MASS. (Sept. 1, 2017) – Junior Daniel Massey (Warrington, England) scored on a penalty kick in the 76th minute leading the Molloy men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the Bentley Falcons on opening night.

The Lions outshot the Falcons 6-5 in the first half. Their best chance came in the 44th minute, sophomore Anthony Cestaro (Massapequa, N.Y.) touched a cross from sophomore Angelo Bordenca (Flushing, N.Y.) into the net. The tally gave the maroon and white a 1-0 advantage heading into the half.

Bentley (0-1) knotted the score in the 57th minute on a goal from Matthew Tidona (Bellmore, N.Y.).

Molloy threatened to take the lead in the 70th minute. Massey started the pressure in the offensive third with a shot that was stopped. Cestaro fired a pair of shots that were blocked in the 70th and 72nd minutes, and Massey had another shot blocked in the 72nd minute.

The Lions broke through in the 76th minute. After a foul in the box, Massey, who attempted a game-high seven shots, converted a penalty kick.

With the lead, goalkeeper Raul Bonilla (Brentwood, N.Y), who made a career-high nine saves, made stops down the stretch to secure the victory.

Molloy continues play Sunday, Sept. 3 when they play the Merrimack Warriors. Kickoff is slated for 3:00 p.m.
