Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader with Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 15, 2017) – The Molloy baseball team swept a doubleheader with the Mercy College Mavericks Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field. The Lions won game one, 9-5, and game two, 4-1. Molloy improved to 14-19 overall and 8-6 in East Coast Conference play with the victories.

Game One: Molloy 9, Mercy 5

Freshmen Sean Hogan (East Meadow, N.Y.) and Jake Saltzman (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) drove in three runs apiece leading the Lions to a 9-5 victory in the first game. Senior Ryan Dillon (Medford, N.Y.) added two RBIs.

Molloy opened the scoring in the second inning. Dillon hit an RBI single to center field to make it 1-0. With the bases loaded, Hogan hit a two-RBI double to right field to increase the lead to 3-0. The maroon and white loaded the bases again, and senior Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) walked to bring in the fourth run of the frame.

The Lions added two more runs in the third inning. Saltzman tripled to left center to score senior Michael Rahn (Sayville, N.Y.), who tallied three hits. Later in the inning, Dillon brought Saltzman home with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0.

Mercy (8-19, 2-9 ECC) got on the board in the bottom of the third, sophomore Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y) hit a two-RBI double to cut the lead to 6-2.

The Mavericks scored again in the eighth to make it a 6-3 contest.

In the ninth, Saltzman drove in a pair of runs with a single, and Hogan hit an RBI single to bring the lead to 9-3.

Mercy scored two runs in the ninth as the Lions went on to win 9-5.

Redshirt senior Bobby Kelly (Mineola, N.Y.) threw a complete game, giving up five runs on 10 hits, to register his fourth win of the season.

Game Two: Molloy 4, Mercy 1

Senior Dominic Danetti (Wantagh, N.Y.) pitched a complete game, surrendering one run on two hits, and struck out seven batters, and Dillon drove in two runs leading Molloy to a 4-1 win in game two.

Mercy opened the scoring in the first inning. Junior Justin Klesow (Frankfort, N.Y.)  tripled down the right field line to make it 1-0.

Molloy knotted the score in the third inning. Podell singled to center to score senior Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.).

In the fourth inning, Dillon hit an RBI single to put the away team ahead 2-1. Junior Joseph Nastasi (South Salem, N.Y.) brought in another run with a sacrifice bunt to increase the lead to 3-1.

The Lions added insurance in the sixth inning, Dillon hit an RBI single to left field to bring the lead to 4-1.

Podell and Dillon recorded a team-high two hits in the victory.

Molloy and Mercy conclude its series Monday (Apr. 17) at the Mitchel Athletic Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
