Navetta's RBI Single Leads Baseball Past Mercy

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Apr. 17, 2017) – Junior Angelo Navetta's (Staten Island, N.Y.) RBI single in the seventh inning led the Molloy baseball team to a 4-3 victory over the Mercy College Mavericks at the Mitchel Athletic Complex Monday afternoon. The Lions improved to 15-19 overall and 9-6 in the East Coast Conference.

Mercy (8-20, 2-10 ECC) opened the scoring in the second inning. Sophomore Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y) hit a solo home run to make it 1-0. Later in the frame, senior Randal Mendez (New York, N.Y.) hit an RBI single to center field to increase the lead to 2-0.

Molloy responded in the bottom half of the inning. Sophomore Sean Hogan (East Meadow, N.Y.) grounded out to second to bring in junior Elijah Leerdam (Jamaica, N.Y.). The maroon and white tied the score, 2-2, on an RBI single from senior Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.).

The Mavericks added another run in the top of the third to make it 3-2.

Like they did in the previous inning, the Lions tied the score.  Leerdam doubled down the left field line to score senior Michael Rahn (Sayville, N.Y.).

In the seventh inning, senior Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.) tripled to right center setting up Navetta's game-winning hit.

Junior Anthony Catinella (Middle Village, N.Y.) threw seven innings, gave up three runs on seven hits, and struck out four batters to record his third win of the season. Junior Kevin Hiss (Merrick, N.Y.) threw a scoreless eighth inning, and junior Shawn Klotsche (Wantagh, N.Y.) threw a scoreless ninth to register his second save of the season.

Alberghina, Leerdam, and Rahn led the Lions with two hits each.

Molloy returns to action Saturday (Apr. 22) when it travels to LIU Post. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
